Show your Irishness on St. Patrick’s Day

For some St. Patrick’s Day means nothing more than dressing in green to avoid a painful pinch or having fun with friends at the bar, for the Irish (including Irish Americans of course) St. Patrick’s Day is an important piece of their heritage and the history of their people. Those who are Irish American, take this day in March to show off and really be proud of their Irishness. If you are looking to show your Irishness on St. Patrick’s Day this year, here are a few ideas for how you can do so:

Wearing the Celtic cross, shamrock pendants and other jewelry

On St. Patrick’s Day a classy way to show off your Irish heritage is with jewelry. There are certainly pieces of jewelry that are appropriate for both men and women. One such piece of Irish jewelry is the Celtic cross. The Celtic cross is a symbol of Celtic Christianity. Irish Celtic jewelry and the Celtic cross specifically were actually introduced to Ireland by Saint Patrick himself. Saint Patrick is the one who is attributed with combining the symbol of the cross with the symbol of the sun. The Irish Celtic cross necklace is not only a popular piece of jewelry to wear on St. Patrick’s’ Day to show your Irishness but it is also a great gift to give to someone close to you that is celebrating their Irish/Celtic background. Jewelry makes a great gift as it is not cheap like a T-shirt or face paint and adds an elegant respectfulness to the reason why St. Patrick’s Day is meaningful for so many. Shamrocks (also known as the four leaf clover) are also a popular symbol to have or give on a piece of jewelry. The shamrock was traditionally used by the Irish for its medical properties and was a popular décor item that many included in their homes. As shamrocks are said to bring good luck, wearing them on St. Patrick’s Day is a fitting way to not only show your Irishness but also to wish good luck for the next year on yourself and those with whom you associate.

T-shirts, hats, leprechaun outfit, shamrock glasses, etc.

While some like to show off their Irishness in a subtle and elegant way, others like to be loud about their heritage and take the opportunity on Saint Patrick’s Day to really go over the edge in their expression of Irishness. For many St. Patrick’s Day provides an opportunity for friends and colleagues to get together to have a lot of frivolous fun together. Some dress in all green while others not only dress in green but paint their faces and wear leprechaun outfits. In terms of items that can be found in mass production, t-shirts, hats, and shamrock glasses are popular among party goes and those who may want to show their Irishness or at least the Irish spirit while attending a St. Patrick’s Day parade. Those who wish to be more than spectators can often find a way to be involved in the parades or other large celebrations by being highlighted in the parade or by offering their insight into the reasons for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations and who St. Patrick himself was.
So this March 17 th make sure that you show your Irishness by wearing some jewelry that has rooted meaning to Irish history or by being over the top and enthusiastic about St. Patrick and dressing in all green and participating in the local festivities.
